1/14/2024 0 Comments December running challengeHe thought I could let myself off because a three hour walk was surely more than a 25-minute run. He reckoned a Munro walk could count as a run but I didn’t think so. I even had a bath half full when I discussed my options with the G-Force. A Munro walked but what about the run?īut I still hadn’t done my final run of the Marcothon challenge! To be honest by the time we arrived home – and after a large plate of burger and chips – I was seriously doubting whether I’d do the run. A great day out in good company and although the weather wasn’t as pleasant as we’d hoped we were still delighted with our New Year’s Eve outdoors outing. The air temperature was even warm enough for me to take off my gloves (something I have rarely been able to do on a winter’s day). It always surprises me how quickly the conditions can change on Scotland’s mountains and as we walked the last 20 minutes back to the car, we were treated to clearer skies, lovely views across Loch Tay and very little wind. More good chat, a great deal of wind and rain, several fun sections of sliding on snow on our bums and more chat brought us back down the Munro and below the clouds. Although we hadn’t achieved what we had set out to complete, we knew that the weather was against us and, in any case, we had still summitted a Munro! A quick discussion resulted in a unanimous decision: To leave the ridge for another day and return to the car park the way we had come. We plodded on a soon reached the summit of Meall nan Tarmachan (1044m) but as we all looked out to where the ridge walk began we realised that the next two miles would be into the full force of the wind and rain. Snow and ice made the pace a little slower than normal and then, seemingly out of nowhere, the winds picked up and we were blown around by big gusts of wind and pelted by heavy rain. This isn’t a difficult climb and we steadily walked upwards on a fairly obvious path. The weather might have been poor but our spirits were high. Fortunately the chat was excellent and having been cooped up indoors for much of the festive period we all felt a huge sense of release at being out in Scotland’s great outdoors. Sadly, within 15 minutes of starting out we walked into dense clouds and mist that pretty much obscured the surrounding scenery for the rest of the day. Setting off from the car park some 400 metres above sea level in amazingly mild weather we were looking forward to a long walk, good chat and perhaps even a view or two. In the spirit of the event the miles that you get from steps taken during the day do not count.
